How to prepare your skin for a great tan

Preparing skin for a fake tan

When you do a DIY job, such as re-papering a room or painting the woodwork, you wouldn’t go about it without some preparation, would you?  We all usually agree that the preparation is worth the effort: you’ll get a better, smoother finish, which looks great and lasts longer.

Then why do some many of us think we can create fresh and natural looking tan, by simply applying lotion onto un-prepared skin? The result: patchy application, unsightly build-up on elbows and heels and an uneven fade.  And then we blame the product or make the sweeping statement that ‘fake tans don’t work!’

I’ve heard a few such statements recently, which is why I’d like to draw attention to how to prepare for a gorgeous, even, great-looking tan. Continue Reading

Sun Laboratories Foaming Self Tan

Sun Labs Self Tan Foam

As you can imagine, I get to try lots of different tanning solutions.  My favourite at the moment is the Self Tanning Foam from Sun Laboratories.

You just shake the can, spray on a small dollop of the foam and then just smooth in with an application mitt.

What I love about it is that, although it goes on as a foam, once you start smoothing the consistency changes into a gorgeous creamy texture.  You have total control over where it goes, unlike some lotions which can be so running that it spills straight off your mitt and onto the floor!

A little goes a long way, which means this product is extremely economical at only £20.00

What you get a a very natural looking tan: no orange at all.  I tend to use Very Dark (which isn’t actually, I find it quite golden on my skin), so the Dark would be great for paler skins.

My skin can be quite dry and patchy, so some solutions ‘grab’ too much in these areas (obviously it’s best to protect these areas with a barrier product (eg Vaseline), but I found the Sun Labs results really even.  And my skin didn’t feel ‘dried out’ afterwards, just well moisturised.

Tanning Kimono - prevents transfer of product

Tanning Kimono - prevents transfer of product

Once I’ve applied fake tan, I use our great disposable (they’re actully vey hard wearing) kimonos : one size fits (almost all) and they prevent transfer of product onto sofas etc.  At just £3.50, it’s a really handy little buy; I even sleep in mine, so the tan can develop ‘at leisure’ overnight!
